From entry-level laptops to stylish hybrid devices, Dell’s range of notebooks has something for everyone. University students can opt for the affordable Chromebook 11 for everyday use, while the extra durable Dell Latitude 7440 Ultrabook is ideal for a busy office. There’s also Dell’s Alienware brand, which produces some of the finest gaming notebooks around. This time I’m going to review one of the most popular laptops in Uganda – Dell Inspiron 15.

Dell Inspiron 15 screen

The Dell Inspiron 1545's 15.6-inch glossy wide-screen LED screen has a native resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, which is standard for laptops in this price range (while budget 15-inch systems typically have 1,280x800-pixel displays). While a higher-resolution option is available (1,600x900), we found the screen to be perfectly adequate for most mainstream applications. Text and icons were easily readable, but the screen isn't full-HD (1080p) for true hi-def content.

Dell Inspiron laptop performace

Performance is very good, though a solid-state drive would work wonders (you can order up to a 256GB SSD as an option). As equipped, the Inspiron 7537’s Intel Core i7-4500U CPU and 16GB of DDR3/1600 memory did the heavy lifting to deliver its Laptop WorldBench 9 score of 65.

Dell Inspiron keyboard

The keyboard deck uses the same textured finish as the lid. The Inspiron 15's matte finish is susceptible to faint fingerprint smudging, though nearly as bad as a high-gloss finish. The full size chiclet-style keyboard is firm, and the black keys travel well, but don't look for backlighting at this price. A numeric keypad sits off to the right, and there's a slightly recessed multi-gesture touchpad with two good-sized buttons at the bottom. The pad has a smooth surface and had no trouble responding to swipe, pinch, and zoom gestures.
