Writing assistants usually work for television or film writers who are very busy and need additional help. Sometimes, they will have to work for an author; they can be either hired by the publishing firm to help the author get the work done in time for the deadline or by the author himself.

Responsibilities A writing assistant has to help the writer in a variety of ways. They have to manage the telephone calls, e-mails and regular mail; often, they will have to correspond on behalf of the writer. They will have to schedule lunches, meetings, parties and premieres. They will have to greet visitors or business associates. They will have to arrange travel and accommodation when needed. If the author goes on a book tour, the writing assistant may have to accompany him/her. They will have to arrange press conferences, book rooms and send out invitations. They might also have to put together press kits, containing the new book, a news release and a photo of the author.

A writing assistant will most probably be active in the creative process as well. They will have to do research and revisions, take detailed notes and help with presentations and pitches. They might also be required to attend meetings together with the writer and take minute-by-minute notes. In some cases, they might have to take dictation from the writer or type hand written material.

In some unfortunate cases, the writer assistant may also have to perform more trivial and personal duties, like picking up lunch or coffee, walking a dog or feeding a cat or picking up laundry or medication prescriptions.

Educational Requirements

A writing assistant has to have excellent communication skills: being able to keep an open and professional relationship with their employer and respectful and informed conversations with anyone they might meet. A friendly attitude and a positive demeanor are great attributes a writing assistant should posses.

They should have good computer skills, especially with word processing software like MS Word. They should have excellent language skills, with an observant eye for grammar and spelling. They must be able to type or write very quickly as they will have to keep notes very often. They have to be accustomed with efficient research methods.

A writing assistant has to help their employer manage multiple tasks that is why they should be very organized and they should have good planning abilities. They should be able to work under pressure as the work rhythm changes when a deadline is approaching.
